On 12 and 13 May David was invited to minister in Hungary by his long-time friend, Janos Beres. Jonos was just 25 when he first met David in the 1960s. When David was arrested at the Czechoslovak border in 1972 for Bible smuggling, he was on his way to a rendez-vous with Janos. Under interrogation David never betrayed his name. In the 8 years proceeding the arrest, David had brought in almost 100,000 Bibles to Janos alone, which he first hid in his workshop, then secretly distributed across the communist countries. Travelling into Ukraine, Romania and other communist countries, Janos took his wife and family with him in order to look 'normal' at the border crossings. Later Janos, like David, was also discovered with Bibles in Romania. The Hungarian communists demanded that the Hungarian churches punish Janos - something they did to the full letter of the law.
Janos has remained a man with the courage of his convictions. Today in Hungary anti-Semitism is on the increase in all church denominations and across the nation. Extreme right-wing neo-Nazi Christian party 'Jobbik' is a vital part of the ruling coalition government, and is openly and consistently anti-Semitic. Recently party member and Mayor of Gyongyospata openly declared his vision of a 'Jew-free' Hungary, which he said could be accomplished in just 2 days, if Iran would supply the weapons for a civil uprising. And yet, the churches remain quiet! In Hungary, 70% of the population are Christians who openly say they are anti-Semitic!
Janos therefore organised a 'Friendship for Israel' day to which he invited the Israeli Ambassador, Ilan Mor, the Mayor of nearby town, Godollo who is supportive of Israel, a Member of Parliament, various church leaders, and David as the key-note speaker. Naturally, there were pickets outside and a very high police presence. The hall was full - Jew and gypsies, Christians and unbelievers came. David touched the hearts of the entire audience as he spoke of the miracle of the re-birth of Israel, of the God of Israel who is the God of miracles, of the fact that, for Christians, our Saviour, our Healer, our soon-coming King over all the world, the One with whom we will spend eternity - is a Jew! Not just the Christians responded, but the joy on the faces of the Jews at this moment was wonderful to behold. - The Jobbik neo-Nazi party had threatened to burn down Janos' business, his home, and to murder his children and grandchildren for being pro-Israel. But at the close of the meeting, the Vice President of the local Jobbik party shook hands with the family and thanked them for allowing him to attend the whole event.
Who knows what God will do now? In Hungary the round-up of the Jews, and their mass deportation into the Nazi holocaust is a living memory, yet anti-Semitism is still the default position of the Hungarian nation. If we keep quiet, then who will take a stand? But a stand has been taken.
