Over the three days in June, thousands of Holocaust survivors, war veterans and other deprived social groups, including single mums, attended the meetings in Tel Aviv. They came by special buses from all corners of the land, from the Lebanese border in the north, to Eilat on the Red Sea in the south. The Friday meeting was mainly WWII Veterans, Russian Jews who fought for their country against fascism. As they said, "There are heroes here today (now in their 90s) who made it through to Berlin!"
They congratulated David on his 80th birthday and presented him with a war veteran's medal and certificate of honorary membership of their organisation! But the most precious was that they came to hear the Word of the preacher (Romans 10:14) and to be prayed for. David preached Christ, the Jewish Messiah. When he called them forward to pray the sinners' prayer, the 'young ones' (under 80 years old) came forward, and the old ones stood in their place to pray. When they finally left for home on the buses, the leaders were calling our organisers on the mobile phone to say how happy their people were and to report many amazing miracles that were not shown from the platform!
On the Saturday the auditorium was once again full - this time with many younger people, familes and single mums. After the preaching of the Gospel, the whole hall stood to pray! They said, "It's a miracle, something is happening in our hearts!"
Russian Jews are a large, despised and rejected people group in Israel. Many came with high qualifications from Russia that were not recognised - all had to begin again with menial work. Survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, persecuted as Jews under communism, often without jobs as immigrants in Israel, without pension rights, either in Russia or in Israel, without war compensation from Germany - often regarded as not genuinely Jewish in Israel - these people need Messiah. And their hearts are open to Him.
The pastors have a clear strategy to reach these groups. They are working round the clock on an intensive programme of humanitarian and cultural care. These people are either completely secular, or acknowledge the God of Israel - but none have heard the Gospel of Yeshua, Jesus, their Jewish Messiah. But they willingly sign up to join the buses, knowing that they are going to hear an evangelist. On every bus there are two believers who offer Bibles and are responsible for the spiritual care of the people. One pastor from Ashdod alone received 1000 new names from these June meetings - all will be followed up and visited in their homes.
Speaking to an audience of Russian Holocaust survivors, and politicians -including former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert - David encouraged them from Deuteronomy and Jeremiah: There is a greater miracle that the deliverance of the Children of Israel from Egypt, and that is their deliverance from the land of North, Russia (Jeremiah 16:14-16). God will never forsake Israel. He loves His people with an everlasting love. In this turbulent time, especially with civil unrest throughout the Middle East, Psalm 122:6 instructs us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
After referring to Jeremiah 16:14-16, David looked out to the thousands of Holocaust survivors and War veterans and said: You are the fulfilment of Jeremiah's prophecy; you are the greatest deliverance on earth! God saw your suffering and came down to deliver. Your God, my God, He is not distant, but He has come down. He says to all of you as He said to Moses: I have seen the affliction of My people, and heard their cry; for I know their sorrows; and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of [their oppressors] (Exodus 3:7-8). - This is why God sent His Son Jesus: To live as you live, to feel your pain and sorrows - but He also came to deliver you. Referring to Mark 9:17, David showed that even though you may be in a large crowd of people, Jesus hears every cry and listens to every heartfelt plea. Jesus is not far away - but is near; He is somebody you can talk to.
Over 4300 people attended the service. As the people boarded the buses they were calling the lead organiser, Pastor Victor, to say how happy everyone was with the meeting, and to report amazing miracles. On every bus of unbelievers there were two believers to care for the people and to distribute Bibles.
On the final day, the auditorium was full - this time with many young people, families and single mums. Preaching from the story of Blind Bartimaeus from Mark 10:46-52, David related the physical and spiritual need of Bartimaeus with the present day problems they experience in Israel of poverty and desperation. Jesus looks at us, just as He looked at Bartimaeus, and says: "Go home; your faith has made you whole." David said: "I want to show you, how you too, can receive a miracle."
After preaching the Gospel the whole hall stood to pray! They said: "It's a miracle, something is happening in our hearts!"
