 The Gift of God

Sin and sickness are not from God. The purpose of the first coming of Jesus was to make a way of escape from the evil, which Satan, and ultimately man, by his disobedience, brought into the world: "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, to destroy the works of the devil!" - 1 John 3.8. However, this is only in part today, none of us is perfect in ourselves, we live in a world of sin and sickness and are surrounded by them. When Christ returns we shall be taken out of this world into the Kingdom of Heaven, then there will be no more sin, sickness or death. Until then, walking by faith, we must overcome sin - and temptation - and sickness. The Bible makes it very clear, the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life. Just as we receive wages for the employment we undertake, so spiritually we receive wages too: if we choose to work for the devil and live in sin, our wage is death - if we choose to work for God and follow His commands, our wage is eternal life.

Sin entered the world through Adam. Because of his actions, we are born in sin and affected by sin. However, the Bible teaches that salvation from sin comes through Christ. Once we receive this salvation, sin has no hold over our lives, we become new creations! Totally delivered! Our ancestors can't affect us, and the enemy has lost his power over our lives! Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "We are a new creation, old things are passed away, all things are made new!" This is again shown in Colossians 2:11-14 where Paul says that our sinful nature was cut away... that we are buried with Christ in baptism... risen with Him by faith in God who raised Jesus from the dead... and that the record of our sins was cancelled and nailed to the cross. So our salvation is clear! Jesus said for good reason, "You must be born again." How? By dying to the old life we had before Christ. We are baptised into His death (total immersion) and come out of the water just as Christ came out of the grave! This is the moment when we receive our 'eternal life' through Christ! Not when we die or go to Heaven - but here and now! I have eternal life, and although my body may die of old age, my life will continue for eternity.
