'When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered round Him while He was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."' (Mark 5)

I want you to understand what is happening in this story; Jesus has just arrived near a town, and immediately a large crowd gathered around Him needing help; but there is a man who desperately wants a miracle: the problem is with his daughter. We don't know, but maybe she was his only child. We discover she was just 12 years old. I understand his emotion, as I am sure you do too. I have three daughters. Many of you have daughters. Some of you are the daughters. This man was so concerned. He came to Jesus in desperation. He is saying, "My daughter is so sick, she is dying; come and help. If You will lay Your hands on her, she will live." This was a cry from His heart. A desperate cry. She was so close to death the doctors could no longer help. But a problem came; so many people were surrounding Jesus, that He was delayed. It was another woman; this time an older woman who has a debilitating problem, and Jesus takes the time to heal her. Then came the message from Jairus' family, "Don't trouble Jesus anymore, it is too late, your daughter is dead. You've taken too long. There is no hope." Can you understand the tragedy? She is dead! "Don't come! Jesus don't come. My daughter is dead! It is too late."

Sometimes we get that sense of tragedy in our lives. If only God had answered me. If only things had been different. If only I had gone in a different direction. - For all of us there comes a time in our lives when we ask that question; we want to know 'why?' Why did I go that way? Why did I do those things? Why didn't God help me? I want to give you the answer that Jesus gave. I can understand the father. One moment before he is pleading with Jesus, "You are my only hope; only You can heal my daughter." In that moment, in the father's heart, all his anticipation is in Jesus. This man loved his daughter. He left her just a few hours previous. He is pleading with Jesus, "Come and help me!" But it is now too late. "Jesus why did you heal that other woman? Jesus, isn't my daughter more important than that other woman? She was an old woman; my daughter is a child. She is only 12 years old. She was so beautiful, I love her so much, Jesus why didn't You come more quickly?" Then Jesus spoke, "Don't be afraid." But the man is still asking 'Why?' - "Why didn't you come quickly? Why did You stop to heal that other woman? My daughter is everything I have." But Jesus answered the man, "Why are you afraid?" That may be the challenge to every one of us, from the youngest to the oldest, 'Why are you afraid? Do you really know Jesus, do you really believe in Him?' Jesus asks, "Why are you afraid, only believe, trust in Me."
