TV-CRUSADE KAZAKHSTAN

Kazakhstan was and still is the Russian Space Centre. The Russians launched the first manned space flight from here, and the first space station Mir, which is still the only international space station. Kazakhstan is the 7th largest country in the world (2.7 million sq kilometres), larger than Western Europe put together. Under communism it was a place of deportation and exile for hundreds of thousands of minority peoples of every ethnic origin. Although Kazakhstan appears to glitter with prosperity, the national debt is $9 billion for a total population of only 15 million – 19% live below the poverty line. But its vast oil reserves make the country important on the international scene as an alternative to Russian or Middle Eastern supplies. Although officially Moslem, the universities still teach that Kazakhstan was originally a Christian country until they had to accept Islam at the point of the sword.

Kostanai

The first crusade in Kostanai began after a difficult 48 hour journey: by air from UK via Frankfurt to Moscow, a six hour wait before the overnight flight to Chelyabinsk, then 8 hours by road – minus 20 degrees, 3 hours wait at the border to cross into Kazakhstan – and our arrival in town just 3 hours before the opening service! We were tired – but the sight of the overflowing crowds, more than 2000 every day for 4 days, the majority unbelievers, accepting Christ for the first time, turned every hardship into abundant joy! Between 5 and 10% of those attending were Moslems – it is the amazing healing miracles which bring these people to Christ! After each crusade meeting there was a follow-up meeting for the new converts and four new Alpha Courses started up in different regions in the city.

Almaty

Life in the commercial capital of Kazakhstan is difficult for believers because of pressure from some Kazakhi Moslems and from the Head of Religious Affairs, a communist who persecuted the Church in Soviet times. Because of this we could not rent a public hall for our meetings – we had to use the church hall, keep all the Christians from coming to leave space, which meant that it was packed out with 2000 unbelievers in the main hall and in the street outside, where people stayed to watch the whole service on the big screen. The miracles were some of the most outstanding we have ever experienced, and we were able to broadcast the meetings on national TV to the whole of Kazakhstan! After David’s crusade in Almaty in 2003, so many converts were added to the church and so many healed, that they had to start multiple services on a Sunday to accommodate all the people!
